Woven primarily in cotton and wool, the fabric features geometric layouts arranged in rhythmic, evenly spaced patterns. Produced on handlooms, Tangaliya textiles combine texture with visual precision and are recognised for their distinctive dotted surface, a defining characteristic unique to this weaving tradition.

Originally created on mud walls and floors of homes this art emerged during festivals, ceremonies and rites of passage. It functioned as a visual language through which families expressed devotion, belief and social values. Over time Madhubani moved onto cloth allowing stories to travel beyond the home while retaining their cultural intimacy.
